It is with great sadness that I write an entry in my blog regarding the passing of a fellow adult league hockey player.
Gabe Fleming was an adult league player for the Slapshot Team. He passed away during a Pay & Play on Saturday, May 23rd, 2009.
Here is the obituary as listed in the Des Moines Register:
Gabriel (Gabe) Dana Fleming, 30, passed away May 23, 2009 in Des Moines, IA. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 27 at Ankeny Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Ankeny Funeral Home.
Gabe was born November 24, 1978 in Dubuque, IA to Dana and Regina Fleming. He and Michele Becvar were married October 17, 2003. He graduated from Ankeny High School in 1997. Gabe owned and operated Fleming Technologies and was employed at Iowa Finance Authority as an Information Technology Specialist.
Gabe enjoyed playing and watching hockey and died with his skates on. He was a die hard Packers fan and also loved riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Michele; parents, Dana and Regina; brother, Zak and sister-in-law, Aly of Ankeny; grandparents, Douglas and Nancy Fleming of Prairie du Chien, WI and Emil and Gloria Schmit of Patch Grove, WI; and five nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

The hockey community is a fairly tight-knit group of players where everyone knows everybody. This type of loss becomes very traumatic to all those that played with & against him. Our thoughts are with you & for your family, friends & teammates.
A Memorial Event is in the early planning stages by some of his fellow players, and more details will come out as available.

R.I.P. Gabe
It will be tough to get past this. I didn’t know Gabe personally, just from playing hockey together the past couple seasons. I felt we, as I do with many others, had a common bond because of our love for hockey. We were thrown into a situation Saturday where we acted as best as we could. Being by your side as you passed was by far the hardest thing I have had to do in life and the memory of seeing you go will last with me for a lifetime. You will be missed on and off the ice.
R.I.P. Gabe
Gabe is my nephew. I am his mother's sister. Gabe was also loved dearly by his many aunts, uncles and cousins on both his mother's and father's side. We had the great pleasure of watching him grow up over the past 30 years and become the wonderful young man that he was.
My thanks for those of you who were there with him that day and for the assistance that you gave him.
Gabe will be missed by many. You will always be in my heart Gabe.
Love,
Your Aunt Pam
I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Gabe in real life. I have had the opportunity of seeing some of the wonderful work he did with Fleming Technologies and knowing him just a bit through his family.
My heart breaks for his family who I know to be wonderful and kind people.
Peace. Rest in peace, Gabe.
I remember the first time I held Gabe when he was just a baby. I remember all of the birthdays and the Christmas holidays that we shared. I remember all of the canoe trips and all the wrestling that we did.
No matter how many times I wrestled Gabe and his brother Zak, they always managed to pin me in the end.
I remember his High School graduation and I remember his beautiful wedding, where he married a wonderful girl named Michele, who brought him great happiness. I remember his maturity at a young age and his quick wit, which always allowed him to put the rest of us in our places when he thought we needed it. I remember when Gabe held my son on his first birthday.
Gabe was a wonderful nephew and he grew to be a wonderful man. We have all cried many tears over the last few days from losing Gabe and I’m sure that we will all cry many more in the years to come.
We all love you Gabe and we really miss you.

Gabe built our website- Imperfectowomen.com, he did an amazing job. Anything that I could say seems so terribly insignifigant. But to all those who knew and loved Gabe, especially his wife and family- you are in my prayers.
Thanks to Grandson Gabe's expertise we are able to express our thoughts here. Every time we've had computer problems, Gabe was right here to help get us going and on-line again.
We have too many precious memories of Gabe to itemize them here. Just as are all of our grandchildren, Gabe was special to us in so many of his own ways. Always loving and caring, always ready to do his part and help out any of us who needed help.
All of our family gathered for Gabe's funeral service. We all watched his burial through veils of tears.
Goodbye, Grandson "Goober." You are sadly missed, and will never be forgotten.
