Vegas for Kids

This weekend my son's 8 & under team is at a tourney in Minnesota.
For those that know about our adult Vegas team and the beating we took, I can tell you it happens to kids too.
They played a team that is undefeated and the final score was 10-0. The shots on goal was the interesting part. 32-0.
In the third period the other team stopped shooting and played keep away.
So as I type this, the kids just finished swimming, running around the jungle area and finished eating pizza. If they had beer and gambling, if think I was in Vegas. All kids in good spirits as they await their next game tomorrow morning. I learned a lot today as kids truly play for fun if their parents allow them to.

Look its Barbie, No its Ken, Wait, its Week 10

This week we pay respects to one of the greatest numbers (10), and to 10th element on the periodic chart, Neon.

Bearings Group Vs. Alien Mike

A no brainer here. With neon colors often associated with Aliens, Mike's team has the upper hand. Other significant factors that add to Alien's advantage include:

  • Dobbie always eats 10 cheeseburgers before each game.

  • Brendan complains to the refs 10 times each game.

  • They have Dave Green (aka Neon) on the team

  • Time Close, Rob Wheeler & Jon Rech all drive Dodge Neons

Alien Mike by 3.

MISF Vs. Slapshot

Top 10 reasons MISF beats Slapshot
10. Tim Knox - You can only hope to contain him

9. Anthan's defense is worthy of the Norris Trophy
8. Storm is in net for Slapshot

7. Kozak's perfect set up passes
6. Karena's goaltending

5. Cheap $2 pitchers

4. Romey's "experience"

3. Kristina's Hat Trick abilities

2. Team name so long they have to abbreviate it

1. Home rink advantage

MISF by 5

Alien Joe Vs. MP Security

Another one that leans to the Alien side due to the "neon" reference. Lowell & Bafia combined equal 10' tall. LeFleur's kid will be born Wed at 10 AM, weighing 10 lbs 10 oz, in time for him to make the game at 10 PM (they will name the kid Tenille and call him "Ten" for short). Every player on Alien wears size 10 skates and Shane's 5 hole is so big, we call it a 10-hole. Alien Joe by 1

Legends/Irwins Vs. Yankee Doodle Dandy Tattoo/Coke

Koenig of YDD/Coke gave every player a #10 Tattoo on their necks yesterday. Each player will be required to slam 10 cans of Coca Cola product. Glessner stated he would only do it if he could drink Coke Zero. They have a Ken & a Ben on their team (which rhymes with ten). Nick Giunta has 10 letters in his name.
Coke/YDD by 4

Alien Hockey Vs. 11 to 7 Insurance

Tough one here. David "Neon" Green owns the 11 to 7 team, yet Aliens are green. Jobgen of 11 to 7 wears jersey #10, but so does Natalia of Alien. If you rearrange the letters of Kent (Jim of Alien), you get 10K, like the race. 11 to 7 typically has 10 subs on the bench. This one is too close to call and will end in a tie.

Cup O Kryptonite Vs. B & B

B & B has finally met its match. The neon green powerful force of Kryptonite will stop B & B dead in their tracks. They have Shaun Greene on the team. You also have Greg Kelly (Green), and Hardy WHITEman, which was actually Greenman at one point, but he wanted it changed. Chad Beyer wears #10 and also sports green underwear for every game. The only thing B & B has is a player with more than 10 penalty minutes...surprise..his last name has more than 10 letters. Cup by 1.

Don't Cross the Line...It's Week #9

Coke/YDD vs. MISF

Coke/YDD is definitely on the decline. After a poor loss against Alien Mike last week (and Mikey didn't even score)...they face a much fiercer opponent in MISF. "Laziness has plagued our team", mentioned Whitaker of Coke/YDD. "These guys don't want to show up and play." This coming from the captain that has made only 1/2 the games himself. "When our leader is gone, we have no direction" creid Koenig of Coke/YDD. " I even gave myself a tear tattoo on my cheek as a symbol of the sadness I have when Whitaker doesn't show." MISF is on a 2 game winning streak after defeating Alien Joe last week. Our players are dedicated, determined and desperate proclaimed Anthan of MISF. "Our players know the scouts are watching for B League, so we can't disappoint." This passion far outweighs Coke/YDD's mediocre play. MISF by 3.

Alien Joe Vs. Alien Mike
In the last outing, Alien Joe put a thumping to Alien Mike. Although Mike's team may have the better record, Alien Joe knows all of their weaknesses. Since there are so many holes in their game, I will share the key ones for all to see.
1) Barker in net - Ouch. He's another Chris Osgood. He played with Alien Joe last season and our stellar defense made him look like a champ. On his own, he's a house league goalie for a Pee Wee squad (at best).
2) Brad "The Mean" Dean - Have you seen this guy? He's like 5'2" tall and not very good. Our team has me & Lowell, who are not very tall either, but at least we're good.
3) Justin West is NO Gene Kelley - The battle of the pushers & shovers will be won by the elder. Gene invented the "shove you out of the crease" well before West even realized the Red Wings were a hockey team.
4) Mikey should stick to kickball. The most overrated player in the league. Easily stopped. He'll be lucky to touch the puck 3 times much less score 3 goals.
Alien Joe by 2

Legends/Irwins Vs. Bearings Group
Bearings has lost their last 2. Legends/Irwins has lost their last 4. Legends/Irwins brings a SOLID 1-7 record. The Irwins players say "We should have never merged with these guys", while Legends says "What time is Happy Hour?" Bearings is the dark horse in this league. All it will take is all their guys clicking all at once, and they will be the unstoppable force. The wins begin Wednesday. Bearings by 5.

Slapshot Vs. MP Security
With an undefeated record on the line, a 4 game winning streak, the top scorers, top goalie, best minor league affiliate, best team bus, coolest uniforms, most ammo per player, etc. etc. etc. the MP team is a force. Slapshot is no slouch. They only have 3 losses and have played some tough games. (A lot of ties). An upset is in the making and Slapshot takes this one by 1.

Pump You Up

Today, I attended Francis Wathier's Dryland Clinic. I know. Most of you are asking yourselves, "Why did he do that?", "He's is in top physical shape and doesn't need it."

Although that may be partially true, I still believe everyone can benefit from additional exercise.

Seriously, I was extremely impressed. The structure, instruction & setting was fantastic. Francis had us (a group of 15) working through a warm up set of stretches that we did together and then on to 5 independent stations. We were divided into groups of 3 where we moved through skill specific drills.

I always enjoy physical activities. Hockey is a great workout that happens to be alot of fun. At the same time, I like playing catch with my son, biking and other activities. My cousin Mike & I have run the Bix race in Davenport, IA for 5+ years now. It's a 7 mile run. We're not runners, but enjoy the thrill of competition and doing something different. I've done other activities like indoor rock climbing & skiing. Each one makes you a better rounded person (and athlete).

So when the opportunity came to train off -ice, I had to try it. My older son, Nicholas, is doing the kids Hy-vee Triathlon. We've run around Gray's Lake already, but I thought this would be something we could do together to get in shape. It was better than expected.

Francis ran us through exercises that could be used for any sport. Some were there as soccer players. As for hockey related....perfect. Quick feet, core strength, agility, power were all covered. We ended with a great ab workout & finally a stretch.

Although I can work out on my own, it is easier and more fun to do something structured. I would encourage anyone wanting to get in better shape to at least give his training a try. Although his clinic is based on a 7 week course, he allows participants to pay per session. Some can't make every one, so this works well. Its $20 for the 1 hour 15 minute session and worth every penny. Personal trainers run $40-50 /hour so his is a bargain. If anyone wants to join me for next Monday's session, let me know. I'd love to introduce others to the joy (and pain) I felt.

There were many kids there with only 2 adults. I personally think the adults (and older kids) get more out of it. I want some company for my remaining sessions, so let me know if you want to tag along.

New Skills Clinic

After great success of a 4 week skills clinic, we are having another clinic. Here are some of the details.
2 Sessions
Tuesday, June 10th @ 8:15-10:15 PM
Monday, June 23rd @ 7:15-9:15 PM
Location - Bucs Arena
Cost - $20/session or $35 for both (pre-registration is required)
Goalies - $10/session (limited to 2 goalies)
Activity - 1st hour will focus on skating, passing & shooting. 2nd hour will be a controlled scrimmage. Coaches will play alongside players teaching position, strategy, etc. Also, whistle may be blown to stop scrimmage to discuss gameplay.
We have already been taking sign ups and spots are filling quickly.
Stop by Alien Hockey to officially register & pay.
Hope to see you on the ice!

This Week is Gr(8)

Slapshot Vs. Legends/Irwins
With both teams coming off disappointing losses last week, each wants to get back to their winning ways. The magic number for this game is 2. With both teams each having just 1 win, someone will have 2 at the end of the night....or not. A tie is a possibility, but I see this with a score of 2-0 in Irwins/Legends favor. Irwins/Legends by 2.

MP Security Vs. Bearings
With an undefeated MP team coming into tonight's game, everyone wonders can they be beat. The Bearings players believe they can knock down the champs this week with the wrecking force of their powerful offense. I think an overconfident MP team shows up and takes Bearings for granted. Broadbent of Team MP Security has added some very new, lightweight skates to his arsenal and stated yesterday "They can't catch me". Although I believe he will be quicker, it won't be enough. Bearings by 1.

Alien Mike Vs. YDD/Coke
Big game here for a shot at 2nd place. Alien Mike has been the silent team slowly moving up the ranks. With Alien Mike goaltender Barker coming off a 3-2 loss last week, he is determined to have a better game. This is the first ever match up between Coke/YDD & Alien Mike, so the outside of each team watching game film, its anybody guess as to what happens. My guess is Alien Mike by 2.

Alien Joe Vs. MISF
Another first time match up occurs for this game. These teams have not yet faced each other and look to do so Thursday night. Alien Joe is working there way to a .500 record while MISF trys to regain its early season dominance. Another toss up game with alot of unknowns. Scott Kelley(Alien Joe) becomes the X-Factor for this game and Alien Joe wins by 2.

D League

Alien Hockey Vs. Cup O Kryptonite.
With both teams having new jerseys made (brilliant merchandising move by both organizations), the Alien team will have theirs unveiled this week. Cup's will likely not be ready, so last year's jerseys will have to do (they are soooooo 2007). Two very equal teams match up here, so the deciding factor goes to looks. Alien Hockey by 5.

11 to 7 Insurance Vs. B & B Lounge
Unless you scalp some on eBay, this ticket is impossible to get. Both teams bring a 5-1-1 record to this epic match up. This game is being broadcast on pay-per-view (only $49.95) in over 130 countries. The NHL went as far as moving the Wings/Pens game from the originally scheduled Thursday game to Wednesday as the NHL players wanted to see this game. "Our games can get tough, but nothing like you will see here" stated Crosby of Pittsburgh. "I'd hate to play either one of these teams." 11 to 7 Insurance by 1.
